Really the only proper pop pilgrimage for Treme would be to move there. Creators David Simon and Eric Overmeyer seem intent on showcasing every corner of the Crescent City, from its most famous restaurants to the tiniest venue where anyone could play a trumpet before an appreciative crowd. For this installment we decided to visit the neighborhood that lent its name to the show: Treme. As Dave Walker points out above, the name Treme only seems like a misnomer, given that only a portion of the series takes place in that neighborhood. Because so much New Orleans music has its roots in Tremé, and because so much of the city’s identity is tied to the music, it’s as apt a title as anyone could dream up.Walker joined us for a walking tour of the neighborhood starting at St. Augustine’s church, a place with a long, interesting history. It was founded in 1841 by free people of color, making it the oldest primarily black Catholic church in America. Its founders insured it would be welcoming to slaves by purchasing pews for them, a move that upset white parishioners. One of its most famous congregants, Homer Plessy, would go on to play a major role in the history of civil rights as part of the Plessy Vs. Ferguson Supreme Court decision. (He’s buried in the nearby St. Louis Cemetery #1, subject of another Pop Pilgrims installment.) Others include jazz giant Sidney Bechet and Tootie Montana, a famous Mardi Gras Indian Chief.More recently, it’s served as a symbol of neighborhood …

Fernandez sings the aria “Ebben? Ne andrò lontana”, from Act I of Catalani’s opera “La Wally.” The piece is a haunting reverie on the theme of traveling alone and far from home. Catalani died in 1893 of consumption at the age of 39, only a year after the triumphant premiere of “La Wally” at La Scala. This performance plays a prominent role in the 1981 French romantic thriller, “Diva” – and is an excerpt from the DVD. Roger Ebert, film critic for the Chicago Sun Times, rates the movie 5 stars out of 5. This was one of the most frequently “favorited” videos on BestArts. The opera, based on a German novel, has a libretto by the young Luigi Illica, who went on to collaborate on the texts for “La Boheme,” “Tosca” and “Madama Butterfly.” It tells of a wild, headstrong Swiss mountain girl who loves one local huntsman and is loved by another. Eventually she wins her true love, the pair embraces high in the Alps, an avalanche entombs the hero and she leaps after him to her snowy death. The libretto for the opera is available (in Italian) at www.karadar.com A plot summary of the opera is available in English at www.spikesworld.spike-jamie.com Browse our website at www.theBestArts.com for more great dance, music and musical theatre performances!

Unless Sen Obama renounces the racist ideology of his current church and joins another church, I don’t believe he would make a suitable President. I also can’t understand why they accept him anyway because he is White. Also will he support Israel militarily if they are threatened?
My fiance and I have this church that we like almost everything about. However, she says that the carpet color doesn’t match any of the colors she would want for our wedding. Is there not a way to hide the carpet or de-emphasize it somehow so that the colors wouldn’t clash?
I bought this cooker two years ago and have never used it. I need the directions for operating it.
