Aired August 18, 2010 on Channel 4 – The number of faith schools in Britain is rising. Around 7000 publicly funded schools – one in three – now has a religious affiliation. As the coalition government paves the way for more faith-based education by promoting ‘free schools’, the renowned atheist and evolutionary biologist Professor Richard Dawkins says enough is enough. In this passionately argued film, Dawkins calls on us to reconsider the consequences of faith education, which, he argues, bamboozles parents and indoctrinates and divides children. The film features robust exchanges with former Secretary of State for Education Charles Clarke, Head of the Church of England Education Service Reverend Janina Ainsworth, and the Chair of the Association of Muslim Schools, Dr Mohammed Mukadam. It also features insights from child psychologists and key players in faith education as well as insights from both parents and pupils. Dawkins also draws on his own personal history as a father, arguing that the government must stop funding new faith schools, and urges society to respect a child’s right to freedom of belief. via www.AtheistMedia.com -

Cairo is a cultural melting pot and with a population of 16 million, it is the largest metropolis on the African continent. The Egyptian people refer to their capital city as Um Al Dunya, ‘Mother of the World’. The history of the Sankt Sergius Church dates back to Abu Serga in the 5th century AD Legend has it that, it was built on the site where the Holy Family once sought refuge. Thus, the richly decorated church is a popular Christian place of pilgrimage and is situated in Fustat, in the middle of Coptic, the oldest district in Cairo. The spacious Mamelucks Necropolis is unique within the Islamic world. Here, instead of conventional graves, entire houses were built for the dead. Within the necropolis, the mosques and mausoleums of the Mameluck sovereigns are particularly interesting. Built in 1900, each day the Egypt Museum attracts thousands of visitors who come to experience for themselves the legendary treasures of ancient history that comprise more than 120000 different objects from 4500 years of Egyptian history, including the unique Tut-Ench-Amun exhibition. Cairo really does strive to do justice to its name, Mother of the World. After all, it was this city that united the glory of the Pharaos with the Early Christian and Islamic worlds.

Father of Lies is a classic story of good vs. evil. Bishop Calvin Jacobs (Clifton Powell) is a well-meaning pastor whose drive and passion raised the profile of his church through serving his the needs of the congregation. Fortune takes a sudden turn one day during a board meeting, in which it is discovered that the church’s funds have been mysteriously depleted. With the church’s existence in danger, he is forced to resort to desperate means to save his church community. He accepts a high-stakes loan from an international tycoon, who is involved in more than just normal business practices. Setting off a chain of events that involve international political scandal and even the death of one of the church’s leaders, the Bishop calls on the higher power to rise above these struggles.

Mark previously called in during show #695 (with Russell Glasser and Martin Wagner) and show #696 (with Matt Dillahunty and Jeff Dee). This appears to be the same caller as “Andrew” from show #686 and “Mike” from show #693. This is a long excerpt from The Atheist Experience #704 of April 10, 2011 (topic “a couple of news items”) with Russell Glasser and Tracie Harris. Really the only proper pop pilgrimage for Treme would be to move there. Creators David Simon and Eric Overmeyer seem intent on showcasing every corner of the Crescent City, from its most famous restaurants to the tiniest venue where anyone could play a trumpet before an appreciative crowd. For this installment we decided to visit the neighborhood that lent its name to the show: Treme. As Dave Walker points out above, the name Treme only seems like a misnomer, given that only a portion of the series takes place in that neighborhood. Because so much New Orleans music has its roots in Tremé, and because so much of the city’s identity is tied to the music, it’s as apt a title as anyone could dream up.Walker joined us for a walking tour of the neighborhood starting at St. Augustine’s church, a place with a long, interesting history. It was founded in 1841 by free people of color, making it the oldest primarily black Catholic church in America. Its founders insured it would be welcoming to slaves by purchasing pews for them, a move that upset white parishioners. One of its most famous congregants, Homer Plessy, would go on to play a major role in the history of civil rights as part of the Plessy Vs. Ferguson Supreme Court decision. (He’s buried in the nearby St. Louis Cemetery #1, subject of another Pop Pilgrims installment.) Others include jazz giant Sidney Bechet and Tootie Montana, a famous Mardi Gras Indian Chief.More recently, it’s served as a symbol of neighborhood …
